When connecting with a potential client it's so powerful to be able to share stories from other folks who have used your services. The stories of others will do tons more than explanations from you. Having potential clients connect with the experience of others is a highly effective way to share what it's like to work with you and your business.
Sharing testimonials authenticates you, your expertise and directly shows the value of your service - if you receive the right type of testimonial. It's important to ask for tangible results from the time you've spent with your clients and customers. You want folks to share stories such as: "I had this challenge, then I worked with you and now my circumstances/business/life is like this...".
It's helpful to have a template or set of questions all set to go that asks for your client's experience (lots of folks have trouble writing from scratch). Most always, clients are honored to fill it out and love to give something back to you. Then you take these powerful result-based testimonials and use them to enhance all of your marketing materials.
See, most entrepreneurs are afraid to ask for testimonials, or they get testimonials such as "You were great. I really liked it." These aren't as useful as "My sales increased by 34% in 8 weeks" or "I had 50% more clients in the first three months." Here are some questions/fill-in-the-blank-statements that YOU can customize for your business, and then send out to YOUR clients. These are designed to give you a powerful marketing message by helping your clients quantify the results they received by partnering with you:
After working with/hiring/contracting/engaging (your business), I went from [ ] to [ ] in [ ] weeks/months.
Over [ ] people have complimented me on my [ ] in [ ] weeks/months.
Within [ ] weeks/months, I stopped [ ] and started [ ].
The job was completed in [ ] days/weeks/months and it was on time and on budget.
I have had ___% better results with your company/program/system than with any other company I've hired in the past.
Also, let your client know why you are asking for their feedback, that you value their privacy and will only share their contact information if they choose (but you do want more than initials to go with your testimonial so politely ask if you can at least use their first name) and you'd be happy to gift them something for the time and energy that they are sharing with you. This creates win-win energy for all!
